10 Sore Throat Remedies for Little Ones
A sore throat can be miserable for anyone, but it’s especially miserable for children. While some sore throats may be serious, which means you should have your child checked for strep throat, others come along with a cold or other virus and will go away with simple remedies. If you’re child is miserable with a sore throat, here are some simple remedies for little ones that you can try for some relief.
1 – Ginger Tea
Ginger tea is a great remedy to try if your little one has a sore throat. This naturally sooths and it’s easy to make. Fresh ginger should be peeled and sliced and then boiled until you have a nice flavorful tea. Allow it to cool so it is not too hot and allow your child to drink it from time to time during the day. If its too bitter you can add some honey to it.
2 – Lemon and Honey
Lemon and honey combined together is an old sore throat remedy that really works. Take three lemons, juice them, and put the juice in a glass. Add a tablespoon of honey to the mix and stir well. Give your child one tablespoon every four hours for some soothing relief.
3 – Cold Popsicles
While cold popsicles are not going to cure a sore throat, they will make your child feel a bit better. They are cold and soothing to the sore area and they make a better cold option than ice cream, since the milk can make the throat feel clogged. Popsicles will also help keep your child hydrated. Look for sugarfree options that won’t give kids a sugar high or purchase the natural fruit juice choice. You can also make some for your little one.
4 – Salt Water Gargle
If your child is old enough to gargle, a salt water gargle can work wonders on a sore throat. Take a cup of warm water and add a teaspoon of salt to it, mixing well. Allow your child to gargle and then make sure they spit out the mix. This can be done every few hours.
5 – Use a Vaporizer
Using a vaporizer in your child’s room can definitely help to ease a sore throat as well. This way the moist air keeps the throat from drying out, since drying out will only irritate it more. If you don’t have a vaporizer, a humidifier can do the same thing.
