14 Ways to Cure the Common Hangover
Was whatever you celebrated last night worth that doozy of a hangover? Drinking alcohol and partying all night may cause: the room to spin (dizziness), throbbing headache, churning stomach, nausea, fatigue and more.
#1 – Hydrate and Rehydrate
You have cotton-mouth the morning after because alcohol is a diuretic. The next time you go out drinking, drink one glass of water for each alcoholic drink. Rehydrate with plenty of water the next morning.
#2 – Get More Zzzs
Going to work in your “condition” is not one of your better ideas. Call boss, sound miserable, roll over and go back to sleep. Rest will revitalize your energy.
#3 – Banana
If you can’t operate the blender to make a banana smoothie, peel and eat a banana to replenish potassium and re-balance blood sugar.
#4 – Ginger
Chew on crystallized ginger to soothe your nauseous stomach. Or, sip on ginger ale.
#5 – Swig Pink Stuff
Many swear by the classic, Pepto-Bismol. Swig a shot of chalky pink gunk before you go drinking to help coat your stomach.
#6 – Grease or Eggs?
A triple meat burger and greasy fries may comfort your emotional needs, but grease doesn’t absorb alcohol. It irritates your stomach more and may cause heartburn.
Eggs are better. They contain cysteine, which decreases toxicity.
Eat something because an empty stomach promotes acute acidity.
#7 – Tea with Honey
Peppermint tea is a natural antacid that reduces heartburn resulting from surplus stomach acid. It also helps remove toxins from your body. Sweeten with fructose-containing honey to help break down the alcohol in your system.
#8 – Detox
Add one tablespoon apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon bicarbonate of soda to ½ glass of water. Alcohol is acidic; the bi-carb is alkaline and will help re-balance your body’s pH levels.
Vinegar aids the liver in dissolving toxins found in alcohol and also balances pH levels. Vinegar replaces – iron, calcium, potassium and magnesium – minerals destroyed by alcohol.
#9 – Sprite
Without going into a lot of scientific jargon, researchers in China determined that Sprite helps alleviate hangovers. Sprite (called Xue bi in China) was found to “speed up the breakdown of acetaldehyde”, which is a toxic by-product of alcohol, created when alcohol metabolizes. Acetaldehyde is a known carcinogen and can cause severe liver damage.
#10 – Kick Hangover Butt with Cayenne Pepper
Sweat toxins out of your body with cayenne pepper. Capsaicin in cayenne pepper dulls the neurotransmitter that transmits pain inclinations to the brain.
Add cayenne to tomato juice or make a tea: Bring two cups water to a boil. Mix in one tablespoon honey, one teaspoon cinnamon and a generous pinch of cayenne pepper.
#11 – Lemon
Jazz-up your plain water with lemon juice, sugar and salt. Sip it slowly throughout the day. Lemon contains citric acid, which helps get your pH levels back in balance. The salt and sugar replace electrolytes alcohol depleted.
#12 – Coconut Water
If you don’t fancy the taste of water, rehydrate your body with coconut water. It is also rich in five essential electrolytes – magnesium, calcium, phosphorous, potassium and sodium. Coconut water boosts the metabolism and helps rid body of toxins.
#13 – Almonds – Before, During and After
Almonds are abundant in Vitamin E and healthy fats, which support the liver. The protein in almonds helps stabilize blood sugar. Eat a handful before partying. Before leaving home, grab a bag of almonds to consume while drinking alcohol and crunch a bunch before going to bed.
#14 – Magic Hangover Beans?
Yes, we have no magic hangover beans today. This concoction is mighty close and will put the pep back in your step.
Put two tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice and one-half tablespoon finely ground coffee (beans) in a cup. Stir to smooth and creamy stage.
Lemon juice filters toxins to help cleanse the liver. Coffee helps clear up that fuzzy feeling and boosts energy.
Time is the only surefire cure for hangovers. You should begin feeling human in about 24 hours.
